Tree Planting

Can you guess what these shovels were for? Was I digging for treasure? Trying to get to Australia? No way!! We were planting trees. On Friday, our grade level went planting trees in Hillside Park in Durham. Hillside Park was originally donated to the city by John Sprunt Hill. Hillside Park also served Hillside Park High School, which was the first high school in Durham that allowed black students to attend.

We were split into two groups, and I was in the first. We arrived at around 9 in the morning at Hillside Park. The first thing we did was put on safety gear to protect us since we were planting trees on the road. Then, we learned about the history of Hillside Park and got into groups to plant trees. I was in a group with 3 of my friends, and we planted 2 trees.

To plant the tree, we first dug a hole while our other group members took the tree out of its pot. We had to chop its roots a bit to make sure it wouldn’t suffocate when it’s bigger and taller. We then had to take the dirt from the hole and pack it around the tree, and finally cover it with mulch. After planting the trees, we went and picked up litter around the park to keep the environment clean. Thank you for reading.
